Few studies directly address the consequences of habitat fragmentation for communities of pollinating insects, particularly for the key pollinator group, bees (Hymenoptera: Apiformes). Bees typically live in habitats where nesting substrates and bloom are patchily distributed and spatially dissociated. Bee studies have all defined habitat fragments as remnant patches of floral hosts or forests, overlooking the nesting needs of bees. Several authors conclude that habitat fragmentation is broadly deleterious, but their own data show that some native species proliferate in sampled fragments. Other studies report greater densities and comparable diversities of native bees at flowers in some fragment size classes relative to undisrupted habitats, but find... |

ABSTRACT The family Convolvulaceae is widely distributed in tropical regions, mainly in open areas. Convolvulaceae flowers are characterized mainly by being beautiful and ephemeral, attracting many flower visitors that belong to different taxonomic groups. This work aimed to investigate the interactions between insects and flowers of Jacquemontia bracteosa (Convolvulaceae), focusing on the pollination efficiency, in an area in the Brazilian semiarid. From November 2011 to October 2012, floral biology of J. bracteosa was investigated as well as the flower visit frequency, behavior, and morphology of floral visitors. The flowers of J. bracteosa are white, showy and open early in the morning, lasting less than 12 hours, with fruiting occurring both by selfing... |

During our studies of various collections of Halictinae from New-Guinea and Bismarck Archipelago, 54 species were found: 2 Sphecodes (subgenera Sphecodes and Callosphecodes), 3 Pachyhalictus, 1 Urohalictus, 3 Lasioglossum (subgenera Parasphecodes, Nesohalictus and Ctenonomia) and 45 Homalictus (5 Papualictus and 40 Homalictus s.str.). Among the Homalictus, 21 new species are described: H. micheneri, H. altissimus, H. filiferreus, H. flavipes, H. flammeus, H. goilalaensis, H. gressitti, H. malgiensis, H. minutus, H. morobeensis, H. pilositarsis, H. rufiscopa, H. rufopurpureus, H. scabrosus, H. scutolactescens, H. scutopruinescens, H. spinosus, H. strigilalius, H. subsphecodes, H. trigoniformis and H. wauensis. The Homalictus are classified into four groups... |

In the current literature, information is scarce on which part of the adult insect body is suitable for isolation of genomic DNA for genetic analysis based on DNA-markers. In this study, we evaluated RAPD profiles generated from total genomic DNA isolated from distinct body parts (head, legs, thorax + wings and abdomen) of 12 males of Euglossa pleosticta Dressler. From the total of bands analyzed, 9.0% did not show reproducibility. Percent variations of bands in each body segment were: 1.1% (head); 0.4% (legs); 0.8% (thorax/wings) and 6.7% (abdomen). The much higher variation (chi2one sample = 10.27; df = 1; P < 0.01) in the RAPD profiles obtained by using DNA isolated from abdomen of the euglossine males suggests that this body part of adult insects... |

ABSTRACTThe present catalogue lists the bee types (Hymenoptera, Apidaes.l.) deposited in the Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil (MZSP). The Hymenoptera collection of the MZSP is one of the most important collections for the Brazilian and Neotropical faunas, holding relatively large number of types and represented taxa. The Apidae collection includes a total of 473 type-specimens (101 holotypes, 30 lectotypes, 190 paratypes, 34 paralectotypes, and 119 syntypes) that represent 257 species currently classified in 88 genera, 22 tribes, and five subfamilies (Andreninae, Apinae, Colletinae, Halictinae, and Megachilinae). Label data and additional information from the MZSP registers, literature sources, and taxonomic remarks are given, including... |
